1989

Ryan-Adams-1989-560x560

Can I just mention for 5 whole seconds how AMAZING Ryan Adams’ cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989 album is? I’ve listened to the entire album twice today.  Twice.  I’ve been a fan of Ryan’s music for quite some time.  Some of my favorite albums of his include Easy Tiger + Heartbreaker.  I’ll admit I never have really been a Taylor Swift fan until her 1989 album.  Fast-forward to the present.  Ryan Adams took her pop-upbeat songs and crafted them into his own.  You better believe I’m going to buy his album of 1989.

I’d have to say my top songs that he covered in no particular order:

What a talent.

I gotta go so I can listen to the album for the third time.

Around Town

Hopscotch: The Remix

Hopscotch overtook Downtown Raleigh this weekend and I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t go see any of the shows this year at the festival.  When life doesn’t take you to the music festival, you make your own version of Hopscotch– hopping to various bars in downtown Raleigh.

Before we started “hopping” around town, my friend Natalie + I hit up Dos Taquitos Xoco for dinner for some Mexican nomz.  Now I never thought I’d see the Bud Light gals at Dos Taquitos… I’d expect to see them at the Carolina Ale House or the Hibernian. No, they were trolling Dos Taquitos with their swag, which we obviously HAD to take.  IMG_2553

You’re looking at the proud owner of some Bud Light wayfarer shades! What’s wrong with me? That’s nothing to brag about!

Like any normal early thirty-somethings we ubered to the normal part of downtown Raleigh aka the Wilmington Street area.  Sam, our first uber driver of the evening arrived in his Mitsubishi Outlander Sport + he told us he wanted that five-star rating.  Apparently that five-star rating meant opening the door for us.  I thought it meant getting us from point A to point B in a safely + timely manner along with a tidy car and being polite in order for getting that top shelf rating… but what do I know?

Sam dropped us off at our “old faithful” bar, Landmark Tavern.  While we were sitting at the bar, we encountered Gary, the hilarious and friendly bartender.  He was also in charge of the music which ranged from Glen Campbell to Bryan Adams to Chicago + Tom Jones. We were totally digging the randomness of tunes. I might have attempted to do “the Carlton” while sitting in my chair and Gary shut it down.  Buzzkill.

IMG_2549

Halfway through our first drink, I was approached by an odd little fella who asked me what year I was.  I had to ask him again what he said since I thought I misheard.  Nope.  He was asking me what year I was in school. Once we informed him we were no longer in school + hadn’t been in quite sometime, he then told us we should go get our Masters.  So in the first two to three minutes he’s telling us to go get our Masters.  Don’t worry, it gets better.   My first mistake was asking him if he was wearing a blue leopard shirt.  I was quickly corrected that it was nautical, NOT leopard.  For the record it was dark in the bar, anyone could have made that mistake.  He also had this Navajo-like necklace on from 1992 as well as a faux-leather fanny pack and his e-cigarette.  I mean he did say to us, “I’m from NY, I AM fashion!” In true fashion, I asked him for a photo.  He strictly told me not to tag him on Instagram.  Ummm… yeah ok, you don’t have to worry about that.

IMG_2555

Before we left Landmark that night we saw him again and this time his entire shirt was unbuttoned.  It’s a wonder I didn’t vomit.  I still get the heebie jeebies thinking about it.

During adult beverage #2 at Landmark, I happened to turn around + saw a blast from the past.  It was Drunkasswolf.  That was his screen name back in the college days so I’ve always called him “Drunkasswolf.”  I tend to run into him at the most unusual places.  As of recent it was Slims + my friend’s wedding last summer.  Small world.  Drunkasswolf still looks like a Drunkasswolf, especially with that beard of his.  Super nice guy though.

IMG_2554

While I was catching up with Drunkasswolf, Natalie was getting hit on by some dude from Arkansas.  He was in town visiting his cousin who was also lingering around us.  When we decided to roll up to Raleigh Times, the “cousins” came with us.  Mr. Arkansas bought my friend the nice, luxurious pumpkin beer and gave his cousin + I the disgusting porter.  I took one sip + handed it off.  Ain’t nobody got time for drinking a dark porter beer, especially when they don’t even fancy that.  #Rude.

Hanging outside of Raleigh Times there was a guy standing next to our table + he was in a baby tee that was too small for him.  Needless to say his cigarettes barely fit in the pocket of his tee.  Bless his heart.

IMG_2551

The “cousins” continued to follow us to the next stop, The Busy Bee.  We were treated to the buffalo chicken tater tots, which were “ok.”  I’m not a fan of bleu cheese + eating spicy foods late at night.  That’s just asking for indigestion.  By this point we were ready to bid farewell to the cousins.  Sure it was fun bar-hopping with them, but we had checked out.  If only we could hang like we used to, we would have made it until 2am.  Our stopping point on Friday night was more like 12am.

We summoned Uber and Gerardo  picked us up in his Chrysler 200.  I asked him if he was related to Geraldo Rivera since their names were kind of similar and he did not respond well to that.  Oopsy-daisy.  I guess I should know my audience before I start saying awkward things.

Final Thoughts:

  • Mullets do exist in downtown Raleigh.  I saw one at Landmark Tavern (see the photo below)
  • Know your audience before you start saying m’lord to people.  Not everyone responds well to it.
  • Also know your audience when you tell the male bartender you like his braid.
  • ITB kids love The Raleigh Times.  If only Felson’s was still around.
  • Just because you’re from NY, it doesn’t mean you KNOW fashion.  Silly little man.
  • The sidewalk rule in downtown Raleigh for bars is lame. (This is totally unrelated to my adventures in downtown Raleigh, but it’s totally lame).

Birthday Shenanigans

I celebrated the big “3-4” last month with a bang.  Several of my favorites joined me for dinner at Irregardless Cafe (one of my favorite restaurants) before we hit the town.  Any by “hit the town”, I mean I we went to a few local bars… this girl can’t hang like she used to.

Bar Stop #1: Landmark Tavern.  The highlight of the night was this stupid video I took.  To truly appreciate it, you had to have been there.  I still crack up when I watch it.  Then again it doesn’t take much to crack me up.

Bar Stop #2: Bittersweet.  I was recently introduced to this AMAZING establishment and I’m pretty much smitten with it.  Prosecco + dessert + some 80’s music? Yes, please! I split the key lime tequila parfait + s’mores sundae with my friends and it was THE BOMB DOT
COM.

Bar Stop #3: The Busy Bee.  I have a love/ hate relationship with The Hive.  I love it when they play amazing music that’s fun to dance to.  I hate it when it gets overcrowded and the music changes suddenly, such as some strange Jamaican tunes.  It’s like flipping a light switch… the music changes without warning. When that happened we said, “bye Felicia” and made our way out.

We “attempted” to go to Neptunes (a total whole in the wall bar) that I love for some odd reason.  Once we saw the line we all looked at each other + knew it was not going to happen for us.  It was then I decided it was time to go home.  I went to the bars I wanted to, minus Neptunes (buzzkill)… but it was a fun night with great friends.

Neptunes, I’ll be seeing you soon.

My Letter to Brandon Flowers

Dear Mr. Flowers,

I’m not going to lie.  I was super bummed when you cancelled your show at The Ritz.  If you knew me, you would know I live for concerts. It’s my thing.  It was also an early birthday present to myself.  I’ve always been a fan of The Killers since day one and was lucky to see y’all at Red Hat Amphitheater.  When I found you released a solo album, I was all over it like white on rice.  Then I found out you were coming to The Ritz the day before my birthday. That was the perfect present.  Fast-forward to Wednesday.  You cancelled the last leg of your tour with no explanation.  Major buzzkill.  It better have been for something serious like a busted vocal chord or you got SARS.  The only good thing that came out of it was they refunded the tickets.  The bad news is I can’t use my ticket for my display I’m going to start working on… it just wouldn’t be right. Another buzzkill.

It’s a good thing I have a forgiving heart.  You’re still on probation with me.  I’m not saying I forgive you right now, but give me time.  And by time I mean a few weeks.  I will eventually build a bridge + get it over it, but I just can’t listen to your album for awhile.  I hope you understand.  Also, if you ever become single again feel free to reach out to me.

Bye Felicia,

Jessica

RIP unused tickets.

Here’s My Second Hand News

Earlier this year I met up with some college friends to see Fleetwood Mac in Charlotte. It was great to catch up with my college roommate + pick up exactly where we left off since we don’t get to see each other often.  We had a drinks + a casual dinner at Lebowski’s in Charlotte prior to the show (they’re known for their White Russians).

Ready for the show to start!

Thoughts I had while at the show:

  • Stevie Nicks is my homegirl + I heart her style.
  • Lindsey Buckingham is a fox for an older dude.
  • Mick Fleetwood is a total badass on the drums + rocked it during Tusk.
  • It was a major buzzkill that Christine McVie didn’t perform Songbird.
  • I don’t want this concert to end. Ever.
  • Can someone get me a time machine so I can relive this show again?

One concert I dropped some dough on this year was for The Rolling Stones Zip Code Tour on July 1st. Best decision ever.  If you know me at all, you know I love a good concert.  Not only did they play at my beloved Carter-Finely Stadium (go Wolfpack), but one of my FAVORITE bands opened for The Stones… The Avett Brothers!  I was beyond stoked.  Normally I don’t make it to the opening act, but I made sure my tail was in my seat to see The Avett Brothers perform.  You also better believe I was jamming out to them as well + getting strange looks from the elder crowd. You could tell who was an Avett Brothers fan when they were performing.

Scott Avett should really be People’s Sexiest Man Alive… just sayin’.

Ok onto the main attraction, The Rolling Stones! What a SHOW!  Here’s their setlist from the show:

  1. Jumpin’ Jack Flash
  2. It’s Only Rock’n Roll (But I Like It)
  3. Let’s Spend the Night Together
  4. Tumbling Dice
  5. Out of Control
  6. Bitch
  7. Moonlight Mile
  8. Shine a Light
  9. Honky Tonk Women
  10. Before They Make Me Run
  11. Happy
  12. Midnight Rambler
  13. Miss You
  14. Gimme Shelter
  15. Start Me Up
  16. Sympathy for the Devil
  17. Brown Sugar
  18. You Can’t Always Get What You Want (with the Duke Vespers)- ENCORE
  19. I Can’t Get No Satisfaction– ENCORE

Thoughts I had while at the The Rolling Stones concert:

  • It provided the BEST people watching, ever.
  • Keith Richard + Mick Jagger are in a heated competition for the most wrinkles.
  • Charlie Watts (the drummer) looked like a turtle + didn’t look happy at all during the concert. I loved it!
  • Best dressed goes to Ronnie Wood + his red high tops.
  • I hope I can still move like Jagger when I’m in my 70s.
  • Mick Jagger totally name dropped NC State, UNC + Duke as well as RTP, which was random + hilarious.
  • The Duke Vespers did a stellar job performing with The Rolling Stones.  That’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, I hope they soaked up every second of it.DSCN0233 DSCN0236 DSCN0239 DSCN0241 DSCN0246 DSCN0254 DSCN0256 DSCN0268 DSCN0273 DSCN0285 DSCN0289

I was beyond glad I went to see The Rolling Stones perform + I HIGHLY suggest that if you ever have the opportunity to go see them, DO IT!  They may be getting up there in age, but they’ve still got it!

It’s Been Awhile… Part 2

Whelp, I’ve done it again. Failed at keeping my blog up to date, but you know what? I’m bound and determined to not give up.

With that being said, I’ve decided to do a recap of the concerts I attended in the summer of 2014 all into one post. Boom!

First up, Weezer at DPAC! Phenomenal show! I’ve been a fan since the 90s and was beyond excited when I got invited to see them with one of my best gal pals.  A majority of their show was playing their music from the beginning of their career. It was pure bliss.

Next up was Vampire Weekend at Red Hat Amphitheater.  My friend Natalie and I had pit tickets for the show and while I’m not the tallest person (I had difficult seeing the show), I was of course in my happy place, jamming out to the music.

The last summer concert was probably my favorite.  He’s been on my bucket list to see, well basically forever. It was BECK at Red Hat Amphitheater! If you ever get the chance to see him live, DO IT! He played a lot of his old music from his albums Odelay, Guero, Modern Guilt, and more as well as tunes from his latest album, Morning Phase.

Can I also mention how much I love his style?! I pretty much loved his entire outfit and his hat! I wonder if I could pull that look off myself…

If there’s one thing I will splurge on it’s concert tickets.  Those few precious hours takes me away from whatever is going on in my life and takes me to my happy place.

What’s your happy place?

I Bought Rob Lowe a Lemonade… You Jealous?

May-jor swoon alert.  I repeat, may-jor swoon alert!

One of my print vendor’ that I had worked with at my previous job hooked me up with some rockstar seats for the Durham Bulls game.  When I say rockstar, I mean we’re literally sitting behind home plate, we get access to the MVP Club (2 drink tickets for beer, liquor, wine, etc + a food ticket)… oh and a free souvenir.  Last night’s free souvenir was a Durham Bulls doormat… obviously I skipped the free swag.  Before I left for the game one of my friends notified me that Rob Lowe (famous for St. Elmo’s Fire, West Wing, Austin Powers, Tommy Boy, The Outsiders, Parks + Rec, and well you get the point), would be at the game to throw the first pitch.

My immediate thought… “oh-mah-gawd! What am I going to wear?!” Followed by, “what if I meet Rob Lowe and get a picture with him?! I just can’t be wearing an “average” outfit to the baseball game!”  I probably went through several tops before I settled with one that said, “hey I’m casual yet still hip” with my Joe’s Jeans and Havaianas flip flops.

We literally ran to the stadium because we did not want to miss the opportunity to see Rob Lowe throw the first pitch.  The game started at 7:05… we were in our seats by 6:55-ish. 7:05 rolled around and I frantically look all around the field… no sign of Rob Lowe. The national anthem starts and I’m casually singing along and gazing in the crowd and it’s there I spot a heavenly creature… Rob Lowe.  I shrieked with much enthusiasm… reached for my friend Laura and squealed, “ROB LOWE!!!!!”  I’m pretty sure the people around me thought I had Tourettes or something.  Rob Lowe was about 15ft from where we were sitting.  I was in heaven.

Ladies + gentlemen, I give you Mr. Rob Lowe.
Ladies + gentlemen, I give you Mr. Rob Lowe.

I frantically started taking pictures of him (yes, the national anthem was still going), I knew I needed to calm down.  Once the game started we headed down to the MVP Club house… I was in need of an adult beverage to calm down.  While we were in the club house I was getting antsy thinking Rob Lowe would be gone by the time we got back (I was totally acting like a school girl and I didn’t care).

That one time we photo bombed Rob Lowe's family picture and ended up on their Twitter feed. HOLLAAAAA
That one time we photo bombed Rob Lowe’s family picture and ended up on their Twitter feed. HOLLAAAAA

During the game I started thinking to myself how could I get Rob Lowe to notice me without being super creepy like the 40-something women who were waiting at the top of the steps, lurking.  I wasn’t about to be that lame.  It was then a lightbulb went off… I’m going to buy him a snack or drink and have it sent his way. It was pure genius!  Before I follow through I needed one more Blue Moon for liquid courage.

Once I had my second Blue Moon in hand it was go time.  I wondered what snack or drink he would like… luckily I had read his book (Stories I Only Tell My Friends) and knew he was sober… that would have been super awkward if I had bought him a PBR or a Bud Light.  Once I saw the kid with the lemonade I knew that was the ticket.  As I summoned the kid that was selling lemonade over my way, my friends Jenn + Natalie put their heads down in embarrassment.  They didn’t want me to draw attention to myself, but when would I ever get another opportunity to do this?! In the back of my mind I was reminded of a shirt that Big Bold Fierce sells which says, “No Risk, No Story” and I knew if I didn’t do it I would regret it.

Unknown
I ordered the shirt the day after buying Rob Lowe a lemonade. It’s absolutely true.. No Risk, No Story.

I gave the kid $10 and told him that I wanted the lemonade to go the gentleman over there (which case I pointed directly at Robe Lowe and described his outfit for clarification) and to tell him it was from the girl in the stands and to point at me.  Simple, right?  Wrong.  He went to an old guy that wasn’t even remotely attractive like Rob Lowe.  I was thinking to myself I just spent $10 for nothing!  Thankfully the universe was on my side and the lemonade was put in Rob Lowe’s perfect hands.  As soon as I saw Rob Lowe scanning around searching for the gal who bought him a lemonade I started to wave at him.  It was amazing!  We waved back and forth, did a funny gesture pointing to our eyes and then he did a slight bow to me.  It was epic and it was absolutely fantastic.  I turned to my friend Laura and told her I could die happy now.  I also turned to my other friends and said, “what then!! Rob Lowe and I totally just had a moment!!”  They later high-fived me and agreed what I did was ballsy and badass.

Who else can say they bought Rob Lowe a drink?  That was the best $10 I ever spent.

xoxo
